Snowy winter fare from the Ahwahnee and Erna's 01/20/15, via San Jose Mercury News

The attention to detail extends from the antique-filled bedrooms and life-size chessboard outside to the seasonal five-course dinners served in the dining room, where winter's chill is banished with a creamy, swirled cauliflower and broccoli soup

Guilty pleasures 11/21/14, via Ledger Independent

Often they were accompanied by Husman's potato chips from the big red can we kept in the cabinet and a thermos of Campbell's tomato soup. It wasn't until much later I realized the sandwich meat I had loved as a child was actually called Braunschweiger,

Rude, raucous and often funny in a newsroom, Larry McCoy has stuck to that winning combination in this memoir covering his life from an inexperienced writer at UPI to news director at CBS Radio to a retired journalist who is as appalled as non-journalists by what many news organizations consider news these days. Too old to be hired again now, he pokes fun at former employers and many of their products and practices. He denounces performance reviews, the U.S. media’s obsession with the British royal family, broadcasters who talk down to their audience, journalists who make up stories, know-nothing bosses, and a universe where virtually everyone feels the need to tweet. Never comfortable swimming with the tide, McCoy says the best journalist he ever met didn’t even finish high school and...

Snowy winter fare from the Ahwahnee and Erna's - San Jose Mercury News

The frosty winter air of the Sierra Nevada evokes primal yearnings -- for a crackling fire, cloud-soft blankets and hot, hearty fare. When the snow falls, it's thick, creamy soups we crave, not feather-light salads. For those who like to experience winter through a window rather than actually out in the elements, Yosemite's grand lodge, the Ahwahnee, offers creature comforts that echo an earlier time, with beckoning fireplaces and sips and tastes that aim to... The Ahwahnee Hotel is a masterpiece of what has been called, lovingly, "parkitecture," a style developed by the National Park Service close to a century ago that blends different design genres, with the goal of harmonizing with the surroundings. Winter at the Ahwahnee is the ideal time to cozy up in front of one of its three massive stone fireplaces and sip a hot, chile-spiked cocktail -- "The Firefall" -- or stroll over to the dining room, with its 34-foot beamed ceilings, pull up a... Construction of the hotel began in 1926, after socialites such as Lady Astor rejected the then-"primitive" lodging available in the park. fortunately, the park concessionaires rethought the original moniker, the Yosemite All-Year-Round Hotel, in favor of the village name of the native Miwoks who once lived on the site. The Bracebridge dinner -- a seven-course feast inspired by the 18th century manor feast described in a work by Washington Irving -- is a tradition that dates back to the Ahwahnee's opening in 1927, but it has been joined by other, newer... While the Ahwahnee awes visitors with its soaring, 87-year-old public spaces, just outside the park's south entrance sits another grand testament to earlier eras. The Estate by the Elderberries -- named for the bushes that grow on the manicured grounds -- is of distinctly newer construction, but that's easy to forget as you drive through the elaborate carved metal gates. "The feeling is like in the early 1920s in Europe at one of the manor houses, where you have butlers and maids," says Erna Kubin-Clanin, describing her "Downton Abbey"-like vision. "They enter the gates and they feel like they're in a different world. The estate includes the 10-room Château du Sureau inn -- part of the Relais & Châteaux association -- as well as Erna's Elderberry House restaurant, a spa and a guesthouse populated by privacy-seeking celebrities, Hollywood producers and other... With its 1,200-thread-count Italian sheets and posh restaurant, the estate is a surprise in Oakhurst, where local dining choices run more toward pizza parlors and taquerias, and lodging competition comes from a Best Western. The Austrian-born Kubin-Clanin trains the lodge's uniformed butlers and maids, right down to their vocabulary and diction, as well as their pampering skills. "The moment someone sits down in the salon in front of the fire -- it's a big roaring thing -- the staff immediately asks, 'What can I bring you. The attention to detail extends from the antique-filled bedrooms and life-size chessboard outside to the seasonal five-course dinners served in the dining room, where winter's chill is banished with a creamy, swirled cauliflower and broccoli soup,... With such dreamy dishes and a warm fire burning nearby, it's tempting to stay indoors until spring. Or, if you must venture outside, pack a thermos of soup to warm you on your trek. The Ahwahnee Hotel: Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987, this 150,000-square-foot grand hotel was designed by architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood, who also designed the Zion Lodge, Bryce Canyon Lodge and Grand Canyon North Rim Lodge. Reservations for its 99 rooms ($471 and up) are snapped up months ahead, but you can get a taste of the Ahwahnee's grandeur in the dining room, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Details: Go to www. com/the-ahwahnee. Estate by the Elderberries: Rooms at the Château du Sureau start at $385. The restaurant, Erna's Elderberry House, serves a five-course prix fixe dinner ($108), as well as a la carte fare nightly and brunch ($64) on Sundays. Details: www.

One of my favorite dishes has long been soup. My mom had to pack a thermos of it everyday for me when I was a kid and never wanted a sandwich. I have moved on from Campbell's and make a huge range of primarily vegetable-based soups, full of hearty meats.
